Our History
110 years in family hands, Schmalz history reflects change and growth. Started with razor blades then moved to transport equipment and today, vacuum technology & energy storage. We have set benchmarks in various industries over the time.
- 1910: Founded the company and started supplying millions of Glattis razorblades worldwide.
- 1910-1945: The first generation, Johannes Schmalz established razor blade factory.
- 1945-1984: The second generation, Artur Schmalz incepted business in transport equipment for postal service & at airports.
- 1954: Started supporting German postal service and federal railway company for deliveries.
- 1961: Our airport apron equipment, Schmalz stairways was use for conveying passengers into aircraft.
- 1984: We shift our focus towards booming vacuum technology under the guidance of Dr. Kurt Schmalz who developed vacuum table.
- 1984-Present: The third generation, Dr. Kurt Schmalz and his brother Wolfgang Schmalz transformed a handicraft business into an internationally successful industrial enterprise.
- 1989: Introduced all the elements that are needed to create complete vacuum systems.
- 1998: Founded first foreign subsidiary in Switzerland which further followed by many more in USA and China.
- 2002: Started supplying Schmalz products online.
- 2008: Introduced first vacuum generator with IO-Link which is our path to industry 4.0, a concept that has not been coined yet.

- 2018: Schmalz digital factory, industry 4.0 was started for greater efficiency and economy.

Business Units
Schmalz has set its several business units to provide Solutions for (almost) every requirement. - Business Unit for Handling Systems: At this division, vacuum technology based material handling equipment that are capable of bearing loads weighing up to 300 kilograms are developed.
- Business Unit for Energy Storage: Here, our company develops storage solutions in which one can temporarily store regeneratively generated energy and use it later as needed.

Our training ratio is 14% which is significantly more than other firms in Germany. From razor blades to vacuum technology, our firm has succeeded over the years and expanded in every direction. Our future in industry 4.0, automation and robotics also seems to be quite promising economically.
- Ecology: We are well aware of the environmental conditions that occur due to excessive electricity & heat usage, emission of carbon dioxide & many other gases or residues that are harmful ecologically. Our company works on all these areas to responsibly take care of the ecology from its industrial processes. We have our own power station. In 2018, our enterprise generated CO2 credit of 1,059 tons in total. The energy that is not used by our own plants is further fed to public power grids. Through years of research & development, we are providing less CO2 luggage in our offered products. We also show a variety of sustainable measures on our guided tours along the Schmalz Eco Trail.

We are laying the foundations for future skilled workers through our training initiatives. It is our initiative which is designed to help the young people in learning & integrating with professional aspects of work and society. We are educating them for social skills, personal development and more. Moreover, we are supporting activities and institutions like:
- Schmalz India: We provide weekly course to 25 girls & boys from 9th and 10th standards on basics of pneumatics. We also provide weekly German lessons to about 130 children from kindergarten age to 6th standards.
- Schmalz USA: We support various local institutions with monetary and material donations. It includes Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, which cares for hungry people.
- Schmalz Italy: We sponsored new jerseys for Scuola Basket Ticino youth basketball team.
